A SOCIAL MOVEMENT FOR POSITIVE CHANGE
SIT. CHAT. LISTEN. SHARE.
“Anyone who has got a bad heart, live like this for a couple of weeks and you start to love people.”
“That’s better than any money in the world, if someone can just stop and say hello.”
“I wouldn’t care if I had a million dollars or a huge amount of money. I’d rather have people just stay with me and stick by me when I’m not feeling well.”
“I’m angry with myself for ending up here. That I didn’t see it coming, that I didn’t plan for it better.”
HoMie: THE STREET STORE THAT GIVES
The HoMie Street Store is a charity retail store that opened in Melbourne Central Shopping Centre on June 30th 2015, and then on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy on June 27th 2016.
HoMie clothes, trains, and employs people who are experiencing homelessness in Melbourne. Clothing is distributed to the homeless community during monthly VIP Shopping Days in HoMie, where people who are experiencing homelessness are invited to shop for free as HoMie ‘VIP customers’.
On VIP Shopping Days, HoMie VIP customers not only receive five complementary items of brand-new clothing and a dignified shopping experience, but also receive free nutritious food, styling and beauty services, and haircuts. Shopping Days aim to increase feelings of social connectedness, and bring HoMie VIPs into the HoMie Support Network.
Alongside VIP Shopping Days, HoMie also trains and employs young homeless Melbournians as retail workers. Through the Pathway Project, our training and employment program, HoMie aims to provide a genuine pathway out of homelessness through the provision of housing, confidence, skills and jobs.
